"City Wall" Via Ferrata

The City Wall is a fixed-cable climb on the Kapuzinerberg that treats you to breathtaking views of the famous historic district. With challenges for everyone, rated A through E!

All information about climbing in the city

The freely accessible area of the City Wall is located at the end of Linzer Gasse. The entrance is right next to the parking garage on Glockengasse. Between March 1 and June 30, climbers have secondary access; the via ferrata is then closed to protect nesting birds. It is also not permitted to enter during inclement weather.

Address of the via ferrata "City Wall"

The entrance is located at Glockengasse 4 c, 5020 Salzburg (at the end of Linzer Gasse). The City Wall Folder contains a map and additional information.

The routes in detail

ROUTE 1 - Kapuziner-Gams Route - challenging
The entrance is on the right side. It starts off sporty with a direct ascent; the difficulty grades B/C are followed by a smooth transition to difficulty levels D/E. The so-called "Götterquerung" is demanding and exhausting, but once the passage is accomplished, there’s time for a short break before tackling the second half. After a short section at difficulty level C, there’s an easy traverse directly into the steep overhang, and the climb continues vigorously to the exit point at difficulty levels D and E - this route is not suitable for beginners!

ROUTE 2 - Salewa Route - sporty
The entrance is on the left side. The route ascends rather comfortably at difficulty level B - climbers will find the highest difficulty level in the first third with a C section. After that, the via ferrata merges into the common junction where routes 1 and 2 meet. It continues to a spot that invites a break. On the right, it goes up over a rock slab at difficulty level C, and the panoramic ladder awaits on the left after a traverse. One climbs it with their back to the rock wall, enjoying the wonderful city view over the rooftops of Salzburg. Once the ladder is completed, the eyes wander back to the wall, and climbers ascend the final rope meters spectacularly but at a low difficulty level to the exit.

ROUTE 3 - Bergspezl Route - beginner-friendly
The entrance is on the left, the same as route 2. It goes up to the common junction, then the route diverges to the left. It continues upwards over a grass ledge at difficulty level A/B to the exit. The ideal route for beginners or for pros to wind down their climbing day.

ROUTE 4 - Aqua Salza Route - practice route
The perfect preparation for handling the via ferrata set in an almost fall-free area, allowing for safe practice: Beginners can hang in at difficulty level A/B and take their first steps on the wall.
