Mozart Week
Under the leitmotif “Lux Æterna”, the anniversary program from 22 January to 1 February 2026 invites you to a diverse cultural festival: operas and concerts, puppet theater with live music, cinema evenings with rarely shown Mozart films, family concerts, performances - and even a pub quiz are on the program. The glittering highlight is the new production of “The Magic Flute” by artistic director Rolando Villazón.
The Mozart Festival as a Spectacular Birthday Celebration
The Mozart Week has existed since 1956, when Salzburg celebrated Mozart's 200th birthday. Since then, the Mozart Festival has developed into the world's most important stage for Mozart's music: Every year around January 27 - Mozart's birthday - concerts, operas and chamber music fill the historic halls of the Mozarteum. Great conductors, renowned orchestras and celebrated soloists have shaped the festival's profile for decades. The focus is always on Mozart's work - pure, unadulterated and with the ambition to rediscover it again and again.
Mozart Week 2026: Villazón stages The Magic Flute
The highlights of the double anniversary: 2026 is all about Mozart's “eternal light”. The centerpiece is a new production of the opera “The Magic Flute”, staged by Rolando Villazón and conducted by Roberto González-Monjas, with stars such as Kathryn Lewek (Queen of the Night) and Franz-Josef Selig (Sarastro). The opening talk “Mozart - Lux Æterna” kicks off the festival, followed by a festive concert by the Danish Chamber Orchestra under Ádám Fischer with mezzo-soprano Emily D'Angelo. Organ concerts under the title “The Queen of Instruments”, chamber music, puppet theater, film evenings and the interactive family format “The Magic Flute - Your Adventure” open up new perspectives on the composer. Accompanying special exhibitions in the Mozart museums round off the anniversary.
