Arrival by Car

Salzburg is easy to reach by car thanks to its excellent connections to major highways. You can get here via the A1 or A10 from within Austria, or via the A8 from Germany. Please note: Starting July 1, 2026, the Old Town will only be accessible by car in exceptional cases. The most convenient way to reach the city center is by using the affordable Park & Ride system, which includes public transportation.

Getting to the city center

The traffic-calmed zone in the Old Town has restricted car access and can only be entered in exceptional cases—for example by hotel guests, residents, and authorized vehicles. All parking in Salzburg’s city center is paid. We therefore recommend leaving your car at a Park & Ride lot and taking public transportation directly into the city center at a special rate.

Key information at a glance

If you’re staying in Salzburg’s Old Town and arriving by car, you’ll find helpful information here on how to access your hotel, including details on the hotel guidance system and the automated bollards that control vehicle access. Please also note that highways and expressways in Austria require a toll sticker (vignette). An exemption applies to the section between Walserberg and Salzburg Nord.
