Hugo Distler - The Christmas Story
Hugo Distler's Christmas Story from 1933 is one of the most beautiful German a cappella works of the 20th century. With additional choral songs for the pre-Christmas season by Tavener, Glick, and others.
In this spiritual oratorio with a chamber music character, the Evangelist narrates the biblical story according to Luke and Matthew, accompanied by compelling choirs and intricate choral variations. The old Advent song "Es ist ein Ros entsprungen" runs as a common thread throughout the entire work, giving it a special cohesiveness and warmth.
