King Ludwig II – The Bavarian Patient
A captivating play about King Ludwig II and his psychiatrist Dr. Gudden. Historical facts meet humorous dialogue – with surprising twists and emotional depths.
In this two-person play, posthumously King Ludwig II of Bavaria and the nerve doctor Dr. Bernhard von Gudden meet – a fictional, but historically based conversation about guilt, recognition, and the misunderstanding of their time. Ludwig accuses Gudden of contributing to the incapacitation and tragic death of the monarch with his remote diagnosis. However, throughout the dialogue, the two discover unexpected similarities: both felt misunderstood, both died in the lake, and both were ahead of their time – Ludwig with his visionary ideas, Gudden with his medical views. The play meticulously combines well-researched facts with humorous and surprising twists, such as when Gudden himself ends up on the therapy couch.
