St. Rupert's Day Fair

20-24 September 2024

Each year around 24 September, St. Rupert’s Day Fair takes place around Salzburg Cathedral in honour of St. Rupert. Historic rides, market stalls with regional treats and a beer tent are all among the highlights of this traditional church fair.

What is so special about St. Rupert’s Day?

Dt Rupert’s Day is celebrated as part of the tradition of a cathedral festival. For over 40 years and over five days, the squares around Salzburg cathedral are transformed into a stage for customs, folk music, brass band music, traditional treats and historic rides such as a ghost train or merry-go-round – all in honour of St. Rupert! St. Rupert’s Day is best visited in traditional lederhosen or dirndl costumes!

Who was St. Rupert?

Rupert was a bishop who was bequeathed the Roman settlement of Juvavum (today: Salzburg) and in the year 696, laid the foundations for Salzburg as we know it today by founding the archabbey of St. Peter. He is the Patron Saint of Salzburg and is celebrated on 24 September.
